PRAYER TEAM, Saturday, Nov. 8, 10am

 Join Salem's Prayer Team

This Saturday--November 8 at 10am, here at church--is another chance for Salem members to gather and lift up one another, our church, and our world, into God's arms through prayer.

Why We Need to Pray Together
In our busy schedules, when it's already hard to carve out the time to worship, why should we gather on a Saturday morning just for prayer? I can offer several reasons:

1. Prayer is a skill.
My mother taught piano. And although I was never one of her students, she told me she knew within the first five minutes of the lesson which of her students had touched a piano keyboard during the week, and which had not. It's partly because our lives are so full that talking to God does not come naturally to us. It's not unusual for us to feel like we're "not sure what to say" in prayer. Why would we? We almost never do it! Prayer is a skill we need to work on. We need to practice praying, out loud, for one another and for our world, or we will never get comfortable with it.

2. Prayer is the responsibility of all Christians.
In our congregation, the pastors are tasked with writing and reading aloud the "prayers of the people." We also are asked to open and/or close committee meetings with prayer. But you don't have to be a pastor to pray. In fact, praying for others is the job of all Christians. In the book of Acts, it says the people "devoted themselves to prayer" (Acts 1:14). In 1 Peter, it says all Christians are a "royal priesthood". Again and again in the Bible, the faithful response to sickness, uncertainty, sadness, and even joy is to talk to God: to pray. It is right and good to do this privately, and I hope that if you have an email address that you check regularly, you are already on Salem's Prayer Tree and are praying for God's people privately when those messages come in. But what would you do if a close friend were going through a tough time and said, "would you pray for me?" Would you be comfortable doing what Christians are called to do, on behalf of a friend?

3. Sometimes it helps to hear your name.
We don't just gather to pray for others: we also gather needing prayers of our own. We gather needing healing and comfort. We gather, often having tried our best to carry the burdens of others, only to realize we need some help carrying our own. No matter how many times a day we lift up our own concerns to God (and for me, I know it's not very many) there is tremendous power in having another person do that for you, in your hearing. To pray for you by name, and to join you in calling out to God. You're not in this alone.

I hope you'll think seriously about joining us for prayer this Saturday. We would be blessed by your presence.

GEEKY GOSPEL DISCUSSES “DR. WHO” - NOV 5TH

All sci-fi fans and enthusiasts (or those who aspire to be) are invited to participate in the Geeky Gospel group, which meets monthly at the homes of our group members, to discuss science fiction and its common themes with Christian spirituality.

This month’s topic is "Doctor Who" and Christian Ethics: When There Is No "Right Thing to Do.”

This 50-year-old British TV series has made an awful lot of hay out of the theme of the Doctor (a centuries-old time traveling alien) being "God-like," but also flawed, benevolent and enlightened, yet with a dark side. It seems like the Doctor always has the perfect answer...but what about the times when there is no easy answer? And what about the times in our lives as Christians, when we're asking, "What would Jesus Do?" and we have to shrug our shoulders? Are there some ethical problems so difficult that even God is troubled about what to do?

The group will meet Tomorrow, November 5th at 7 p.m., at the residence of Scott and Irene Amoros.  For more information please see Salem’s Facebook page, or contact Pastor Tim.

Join us for a discussion that's sure to be "bigger on the inside."

Salem Quilt Show Art Exhibition Starts Nov. 2

Please mark your calendars for  The Quilt Show art exhibition   sponsored by the Arts Committee.  The show opens in the Agape Art Gallery on Sunday, November 2nd and runs through the holiday season.

Quilt submissions will be accepted tonight (October 29th) between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., and Saturday, November 1st, between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

All types of quilts will be accepted (handmade, machine made or artist quilts; any size, style or age, as long as they are not too worn or fragile to hang).  Keeping in mind that many quilts are larger than     3' x 6', we ask that larger quilts be folded to fit to our space restrictions in order to accommodate as many quilt entries as possible.

It is necessary that the following parameters be followed for hanging:

· Quilts that are larger can be folded over a wooden dowel that should be at least as long as the folded width of the piece.  The dowel should be a minimum of 1/2" diameter in order to support the quilt without sagging.

· If the quilt is smaller, a fabric "sleeve" can be attached to within 3" of the top edge of the quilt, through which the dowel can be inserted.

· It is important that the dowel project at least an inch beyond the side edges so that the hanging mechanism can be attached to each side of the dowel.

If you have any questions about how to prepare your quilt for hanging. Please contact Char Brooks (phone number available through Salem Office). We look forward to a quilt show full of surprises and variety.

Salem Supports Seafarer's Shoebox Christmas

It may be difficult to imagine that Christmas is only 90 days away, but the Salem Stitchcrafters have already begun their preparations for this year's "Christmas at Sea" project.

The goal is to prepare 30 Christmas gift boxes for Pastor Gerry Rickel to deliver to a ship docked in the Port of Baltimore in early December. These gift boxes will be distributed to crew members at sea on Christmas Eve. Although the Stitchcrafters are making hats and scarves, the group will need to purchase additional items for each of the 30 boxes. Monetary contributions or donations are greatly appreciated. Please place your cash or check –payable to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church– in a pew envelope marked “Seafarers,” and place this in the offering plate by November 2nd.

The Stitchcrafters also require 30 each unused Christmas cards, and good-sized shoe boxes, as well as smaller gifts (pens, paper pads, playing cards, etc.), which it hopes to collect through donations. These items can be deposited in the box designated "Christmas at Sea" in the church narthex.

Please direct any questions about this project to this year’s coordinators, Carol Rau  or Barbara Beem (call church office at 410 747 0720 for contact info).
